New Delhi Monkey Man are New York's latest and most exciting group.
Do you find that sentence acceptable? What about the grammar? Shouldn't it read ' New Delhi Monkey Man is...'? No! New Delhi Monkey Man is the name of the whole group, and not just one of its members. Each musician is part of the sound known as New Delhi Monkey Man, part of a complete ensemble. It's quite simplethe boys, all three of them, are New Delhi Monkey Man. Why are they all New Delhi Monkey Man? Because it's easy to be born. It's after that that it gets tougher. Giving birth, for instance, to a hit single...'taint simple. Lee, Gary and Chris weren't born into show business, but then, so aren't a lot of young people. A lot of illustrious Jrs. have tried to break from their forefather's anyman footsteps, and bombed out. Lee, Gary and Chris have nearly removed themselves forever from the $600 deduction class. They're now in a class by themselves. Lee, Gary and Chris had one of the best introductions to the entertainment world that any neophyte trio could hope for. Two of the three members come from homes with an above average tv viewing time. And Gary's father became rich bilking the other two lads' fathers. The three boys, all in their earliest teens and students of Our Lady of Camella Catholic School, met on a little league diamond. Chris was in the process of pitching a no-hitter against Lee's team. The three ball players soon discovered a mutual interst in alcohol, too. They formed a trio. Sinatra heard the three rehearsing in a next door upstairs bedroon during a visit to Dino's house, and brought them to the attention of Lloyd Hoag, chief of police. Patrolman Buddy Rounders took over from there, working over the trio with some of the best talent in the precinct. The results: New Delhi Monkey Man. And the results have added a new generation of music to New York and America. Who are New Delhi Monkey Man ? Chabowski:
Well, I've been performing since 1983 when I was the guitarist for this
upstate New York band, The Resisters. We put out a couple of records. Arquette: What? Oh sorry, I was just reading here about how they think there was more than one person involved in the Kennedy assassination.
Chabowski:
Yeah, they've always thought that. Arquette:
Yeah. So this is your first gig then. Chabowski:
No, after the Resisters, actually during the Resisters, I formed a band
called Dog's Life that put out a couple of records. Also upstate. That
lasted eight years. Arquette:
Let me guess the rest. You thought to yourself, "I'm better than
this! I'm the real talent! I'm the star!" and you quit to go off
and find stardom on your own, blah, blah, blah. Chabowski:
Well no actually, someone else did that. Arquette:
So why didn't you just replace them? Chabowski:
Well, it's a long story, but
Arquette:
Look, I'm on a schedule all right? Is it O.K. if I use this vase for
my ashes? Chabowski:
There's an ashtray right there. Arquette:
I mean my poodle's ashes. I'm having the little beast cremated this
afternoon and I forgot to bring a receptacle. Chabowski:
I can't let you take that one. It was a gift. Arquette:
O.K. fuck it! So when did you move to Manhattan? Chabowski:
About two years ago. Arquette:
And you waved your little magic wand and put together a band, right? Chabowski:
No, I've been playing solo acoustic shows for about a year now. It's
not exactly my thing, but it's been good for my
Arquette:
Save me the sordid details. So what, you ain't got no band? Chabowski:
I do now. It'll be making its debut on May 9th at the Sidewalk
Café. Arquette:
Look, I gotta run. Point me to the little girl's room and page my car
service for me, will ya?
